Lewis, who grew up with family members involved in gangs, has been actively working to improve his life and assist other young people through the Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory. He interned and was later hired by the conservatory's Bridge Academy Movement, a program for justice-impacted youth. Despite his efforts to move past his past, Lewis has reported experiencing ongoing police harassment and profiling.

Witnesses, including a local cook and the conservatory's programs coordinator, described Lewis being pinned against a wall by officers. The large police response, which included a helicopter, occurred as Lewis and seven students from the Bridge Academy were getting coffee. Community members and neighbors gathered at the scene, with some filming the interaction.

Concerns have been raised about the necessity of the extensive police deployment and the lack of transparency from the LAPD. The conservatory's executive director noted that different reasons were given for the detentions, including obstructing a sidewalk and suspicion, despite the individuals not being minors. The incident has further strained trust between the community and law enforcement.
